Naro is Soka’s husband. Although he is not directly related to Sundara and not really obligated to take care of her, he is ironically the only adult figure in Sundara’s household that shows any respect and affection for Sundara. Naro is more open to change than most other Khmer adults and it seems to be this characteristic that allows him to move ahead as he is now an accountant at a time when many other Khmer’s who were not as willing to quickly adapt to this new life in America were still only able to hold menial jobs. Naro’s love, encouragement, and openness seems to be the very aspects that keeps Sundara hard-working, patient, and obedient at such an impressionable age when most teenagers begin to feel rebellious.
