Moni, Sundara’s older friend shares her good news of her plans to get remarried. Many other Khmers gather at Soka and Naro’s house for advice and fellowship. Sundara realizes that she is becoming more American when she starts to desire to be with people that are not matched for her. Sundara is reminded of her goals to go to medical school, become a doctor, and get in a good arranged marriage, like a proper Khmer girl in America. Sundara finds many culture clashes Jonathan asks Sundara out on a date. Sundara overhears Cathy talking about Jonathan and how much power Cathy holds over him. Sundara goes through another culture clash between Cambodia and America, Americans thrive on confrontation while Cambodians would prefer to smooth any conflicts over. Pok Simo, a fellow Khmer student sees Sundara with Jonathan. This worries Sundara because Pok Simo could report her for her inappropriate actions for a Khmer girl. People at school start to notice Sundara. Everyone knows that Jonathan is in love with Sundara. Cathy becomes very protective and tells Sundara to back off. Sundara is very surprised at this confrontation and realizes that even if Sundara felt anything for Jonathan, she would not be allowed to have anything with him. Sundara goes on a forbidden visit to Jonathan’s house. She meets his parents, and they all go sailing on a man made lake. Sundara finds this amazing because it is so different from “the might Mekong” (p 99, Crew). Jonathan and Sundara admit their love for each other. Jonathan visits Sundara’s house to take her out on a date! He breaks many Cambodian customs such as wearing shoes indoors and petting Pon’s head. Soka discovers Jonathan in her house and is infuriated at Sundara. Soka is very angry that Pok Sary’s wife’s stories about Sundara fraternizing with American boys are true. Soka makes Sundara promise to forget about Jonathan. Sundara remembers her childhood love’s last memories with her and decides to wait for him and end things with Jonathan.
